Impact Assessment: Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport

ABSTRACT : Ports play a key role in revenue generation in most developed countries. India, has a long coast line of 7517km but only 1 port JNPT (Mumbai, India) figures among the top 50 ports in the world in terms of cargo handled. The Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport, Kerala, India with its natural draft of 24m has the significance to be developed as a major International port in Indian subcontinent. Effort has been made here to study the land use effect due to the proposed port. This paper attempts to find the existing condition and the future developmental requirement that would be created in the core area of the proposed port. The change in demographic profile, occupational pattern and land use are studied and growth of port area is assessed.
